Run A Relay News

March 2009

Hello Runners,

Spring is here! I'm sure most of you are planning what races you'll be doing this season.

Long distance team relay races continue to gain in popularity, and for good reason. In this economy, there is no other race that delivers more fun per dollar.

Our philosophy for our relay races continues to be we are not out to be the biggest - we are not interested in creating traffic jams, overwhelming local communities, or selling out to sponsors. One blogger said our relay had a "boutique feel." I take that to mean that we come across low key yet are passionate about our races.

Our goal is still to design relays with the most scenic routes, and to put on the most organized race possible. While we may be missing some of the amenities bigger races have (bands, beer gardens, and tons of free "stuff"), I am confident you won't find many races where the race director has put as much time and effort into making their race as memorable as possible.

Participants in our races will receive:

  • Tech shirt (High School Teams receive cotton T-shirts)
  • Portable Toilets at every exchange
  • Excellent directional signage to be supplemented with the leg maps
  • Race handbooks with relay information, rules, and leg maps
  • Finish Line Meal (burgers, veggie burgers, drink, etc.)
  • Awards to the top three teams in each of the competitive categories
  • Rural Vermont or Colorado hospitality and scenery

4TH ANNUAL GREEN MOUNTAIN RELAY - VERMONT - SATURDAY - SUNDAY, JUNE 20 - 21

Our third weekend in June date near the Summer Solstice proved to be very popular last year. The route could be the most scenic in the U.S. Route 100, which appears on many "Top 10" lists of American's most scenic roads, is a bucolic, two-lane road lined with maple trees, passing through narrow valleys, picking its way around cornfields, and traveling through small villages rather than ignoring them.

As one participant told us:

"On behalf of the Boston Stragglers, I just wanted to say thank you for putting on such an amazing event. We've done the biggest/most prestigious relays in the US, and I can hardly believe that your event, after only 3 years in the making, meets if not exceeds the professionalism and organization of those races. Truly amazing! I will certainly be promoting your event to every runner I know!"

6TH ANNUAL WILD WEST RELAY - COLORADO - FRIDAY - SATURDAY, AUGUST 7 - 8

Registrations are well ahead of last year's pace. Right now, there is still room but the number of teams is capped at 135. This could be the first year the WWR sells out.

The WWR has developed a national reputation. The varied scenery is the star of this course.

JOIN TEAM BLUE

Blue Planet Run

Timberline Events is proud to become associated with the Blue Planet Run Foundation. The Blue Planet Run Foundation funds water projects entirely through its innovative Peer Water Exchange.

The Peer Water Exchange focuses on funding low-tech projects that are completely sustainable and maintainable by the communities they support. The projects demand a high level of "sweat equity" and participation in both building and education from the community. Learning the principals of safe drinking water and how systems work is essential. Projects involve education, hygiene, sanitation, and sometimes even apparently unrelated activities such as reforestation (to protect and enrich the water system) and family planning education.

We have found that the cost for these types of projects, thanks to the efficiency of PWX, is roughly $30 per person affected. And we expect the solutions put into place to last a lifetime. Tackling the water crisis on this level requires more commitment, organization and stamina then applying temporary Band-Aid fixes like shipping in water or providing chemicals to treat dirty water. The Blue Planet Run Foundation is focused on solving the drinking water problem world-wide, rather than simply relieving it. You have probably heard the saying, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day; teach him how to fish and he'll eat forever." Well, that's the way they feel about water.
