Wild West Relay - Relay News

July 18

WWR Captains,

The start times are now posted! If you had a time request, I did my best to accommodate you, but for example, sometimes there were too many teams that needed to start before the time you wanted due to their average pace, so I had to bump you back a bit. Some of the teams I had to start a bit later for the same reason, I had to fit in slower teams. But everyone, if the times you gave me are reasonably accurate, should be at the finish in Steamboat by 3:30 PM.

I've also posted the opening and closing times of all the exchanges. The reason for this chart is so you know what time the Exchanges are schedule to open and close. If you are arriving at the exchanges before they open, it is because your team misrepresented their speed and as such, you were scheduled to start too early. Any team who finishes two hours faster than their projected finish time will have two hours added to their finishing time.

If you are falling behind and exchanges are going to close on you, you have three options:

  1. If you want to keep running in order, you must withdraw from the race. You will no longer be supported and are officially out of the race. You will be a DNF.
  2. You can skip a leg or two, drive ahead, and start running again. If you do this, more than one person can run at a time so each runner on your team gets in their runs. You will be credited as a finisher but without an official time.
  3. You can run simultaneously. What this means is have your next runner start their their leg before your runner out on the course arrives. Do this how ever many times you need to to get back on track. Keep good individual leg time records so that your total time can be calculated. You will be credited as a finishing team with an official time provided you keep and turn in accurate time records. If not, you will be credited as a finisher but without an official time.

Most of the time, this becomes a problem in the second half of the race. The closing time is based on a pace of 10:30 min/mile for a team starting at 5:30. If your team is slower than this pace, you could run into problems. Or, if your team misrepresented their time and were scheduled to start too early, then you'll fall behind and exchanges could be closing. This problem will escalate as you continue, so better to get back in the pack early.

The links included this email are also on the Captain's Resources page. You can also download and print out the Starting Times if you want to keep track of your competition, and the Exchange Opening/Closing Time Chart.

Any teams requesting to change their start time will be charged $75, but keep in mind, only a maximum of 10 teams will start in any one wave.

If you need to change your category, please try to let me know next week. The week of the relay, I won't be chained to my desk like I've been the last couple of months so responses to emails will be slow.

There will be one more important email next week that will be sent to all participants (that I have emails for).

As always, any questions, let me know.

Have a great weekend and see you in a couple of weeks!
